What is included in a Bright Mailbox subscription?
Our subscription is designed to drive an ongoing conversation between you and someone you love and want to stay in touch with.
To achieve this, the following cycle occurs every 14 days:
1) A hand-assembled envelope containing that mailing's interesting information and conversation starters is prepared and sent to your loved recipient.
2) As the sender, you receive a digital PDF copy of 'what's inside' that envelope, sent via email.
3) When the package is delivered to your recipient, you receive a delivery notification email. That's your reminder to give your recipient a call. You've got new things to talk about!
Subscriptions are billed on a per-mailing basis, and new charges are posted every 14 days. You can cancel at any time.
Who is Bright Mailbox designed to connect?
Bright Mailbox is designed to connect you, the 'sender,' with any 'recipient' you'd like to grow your relationship with.
You may be the digital native reading this website and carrying an advanced smartphone, but the recipient never needs to touch a computer, enter a password, or get any technical help.
All your recipient needs to do is receive their mail, and talk with you on the phone when you call them. Easy.
Where can Bright Mailbox mailings be sent?
Bright Mailbox members can live down the street - or across the globe - from each other.
Though many Bright Mailbox recipients live in eldercare facilities, nursing homes, veterans homes or long-term care, we also serve military families, college families, boarding school families, temporary job relocations, and many more.
If you have family or friends you'd like to build a relationship with anywhere, Bright Mailbox was built to help.
We are currently sending subscriptions outside the United States manually. Please write [email protected] to inquire on whether we can serve you internationally.
Can I add pictures to personalize the packages?
Yes! Following up on popular demand from our members, we have added a feature to print and include up to three 4x6 photos in your package. We'll prompt you to upload them a few days before the package goes out in the mail.
Can mailings be more- or less-frequent than 14 days?
Because Bright Mailbox's core purpose is to build relationships, 14 days was chosen to build a regular rhythm of calls and conversations, 14 days is our only subscribable cadence via the website.
However, if you have a custom frequency request, please write [email protected] and we'll make something work.
Can I put my subscription on "hold" for a period?
Yes. We are happy to say the most common reason for hold requests is because our senders and recipients are traveling to see each other in person.
We also offer holds during periods of travel or other life events.
However, even if mailings aren't moving between the two of you, we encourage you to keep your cadence of communication going!
Can I have multiple recipients?
Yes, and many members choose to cover many branches on the family tree or cover multiple friends. To keep things easy for you as the sender, we ensure that all of your recipients receive the same conversation prompts and fun information in their mailings, so you don't have to keep track of who-got-what.
Is a large-print version available?
Yes. Our standard mailings use fonts of 14 points or larger, but a free 'large-print' option ensures 20 point fonts are used, and 1.5 leading is used, in accordance with health.gov recommendations.
What are some example "information topics"?
Recent mailings have included facts about:
--The most popular inventions of the last 50 years
--Some of the most common, and uncommon, hobbies people pursue
--Koalas, kangaroos and more strange animals from Australia
Each mailing tries to make both of you smarter about something fun and interesting. We intentionally avoid sensitive topics, such as politics, religion and war.
What are some example "conversation starters"?
Our conversation starters are sent to both the recipient and sender, so you're both prepared. Members report this also reduces any awkwardness in asking the question, because it's been sent in advance. Recent prompts have included:
--Can you tell me about someone who has had a big influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you?
--What makes us such good friends?
--Do you remember when your last child left home for good? What changed as an "empty nester?"
--Did you get into trouble at school? What was the worst thing you did?
We always send a few questions, so you can stay away from anything sensitive or not applicable.
My recipient is digitally-savvy, is there an online-only option?

What COVID-19 precautions are taken by Bright Mailbox?
The safety of the recipients you love is extremely important to us. Though we are pleased to see that surface-to-surface transmission, especially for something that has been routed in the mail for a few days, appears to be of low concern, and we use a UV-C lamp to kill any viruses residing on these mailings before we put them in the mail. We encourage you to have your recipient thoroughly wash their hands after handling all mail, including their Bright Mailbox mailings.
